Creating The Ultimate Bachelor/Bachelorette Pad
The Ultimate Bachelor/Bachelorette Pad
Everyone wants a kitchen that suits their lifestyle, so over the next few weeks, the blog will be focussing on kitchens created to meet the needs of the individual. This week we’re looking at the ideal kitchen for singles.
Whether you’re a man, or woman, living on your own, there are common issues to take into account when planning a kitchen that meets your needs.
If you live alone, then more than likely, you’ll be spending a lot of time at work, so two of the key things you need to look at is speed and convenience. You want to be able to prepare food quickly and minimise the amount of cleaning up you do.
Equipped for the single life
Achieving that means putting thought into the equipment you use. A few quality multi-functional appliances, utensils and cookware will serve you better than lots of poor quality kitchenware.
The better your equipment, the more efficient your life will be in the kitchen.
Every single person should have a dishwasher to avoid a pile-up of dirty dishes in the sink and get the best microwave you can afford, ideally with a built-in grill.
Invest in a slow cooker and there’ll always be a good meal waiting for you at home after work, with minimal clearing up afterwards.
Buy one really nice set of crockery for dinner parties. Don’t skimp on cost when it comes to glassware either. It doesn’t cost much to impress! Additionally, a decent set of knives in a block will save on space and prep time.
Big for one, tiny for ten
Another priority will be space. As a single person, you don’t need a huge home. Most singles live in an apartment or flat, so when people come round for dinner or drinks, things can get a little congested.
The chances are you’ll all be congregating in the kitchen, so you’ll need to keep the space as uncluttered as possible. Freestanding appliances are a no-no.
Integrate your fridge, oven and dishwasher into your new layout. An island can double up as an eating/sitting area if you have space for one.
It’s essential you keep countertop appliances to a minimum (see the previous section). Overhead hangers for pots and pans look chic and can save you time fumbling around in cupboards. Cooking utensils similarly can be hung from rails and hooks.
Get single-minded on style
Planning for space doesn’t mean you don’t have to cut down on style. Visit markets, car boot sales and fairs for cool items that are both functional and add flair.
Novelty items, such as a bookshelf that doubles as a knife rack, makes a great talking point, as well as practical sense.
In an open plan apartment, you can clearly define areas by painting them contrasting colours. For example, if you go for a neutral hue in your main living area, go for a bold, striking colour in the kitchen.
Likewise, customise art for each space. While relaxing images will add a sense of calm to the living area, antique advertisements and pictures of food will add a lively bohemian feel to the kitchen area.
