Everything But The Kitchen Sink

Everything But The Kitchen Sink

When it comes to the kitchen, people often spend more time planning their layout and what kind of gloss the cabinets should have than they do considering different sink styles. Many people figure they will just go along with the regular stainless steel option.

However, utilising your kitchen sink as a design feature can make all the difference to the look and quality of your kitchen.

Whether you choose stainless steel, ceramic, copper or another material altogether, both the shape and style of your sink will determine how practical and stylish it is.

Copper sinks

A copper sink is perfect for adding rustic warmth to any kitchen. Whether you choose a small copper bowl or a huge farmhouse sink, copper is sure to hit the right note, standing out from glossy surroundings and highlighting any wood features in the kitchen. Copper is also hardwearing and durable, and can be a wonderful alternative to the regular kitchen sink.

Copper sinks work especially well in countryside or big industrial kitchens, but be aware that style like this can be expensive.

White ceramic sinks

A ceramic sink offers a lot of flexibility in your kitchen design. They come on a range of different shapes and sizes, some simple bowls and some with drainage on their side. The pure white adds an elegant touch, and the simple and streamlined design works perfectly in a modern kitchen.

Strong and heavy, white ceramic is particularly effective when used in a farmhouse sink, as the strong, clean lines bring a balance to the hefty hunk of material used.

Ancient materials

Using strong, old materials such as granite or soapstone can look exceptionally beautiful as well as being built to last. Some of these stones are over a thousand years old and hand-carved designs by specialist stonemasons look amazing in both modern and contemporary kitchens.

Granite sinks look particularly remarkable when integrated into a granite kitchen worktop, making your sink and worktop blend together seamlessly.

Old Reliable

The stainless steel sink is a UK favourite, and it’s no wonder why. It’s a budget ideal but you can get smart looking, hardwearing designs too that are practical with drainer insets. The steel basin in the Astor Oak kitchen by My Beautiful Kitchen showcases perfectly how stainless steel can blend seamlessly into your kitchen design.

A stainless steel sink is also ideal if you’re renovating for rental purposes or if you want to experiment with usual shapes and designs without a huge price tag.

Making the most of it

Whatever you decide, you can always enliven your kitchen space with something a little more unusual. Dark and black sinks are becoming increasingly popular in modern kitchens, such as a single black bowl.

You can opt for a roomier sink and a half to make washing up that bit easier, or even go for a double sink to get rid of dishes quickly. Putting a sink in the corner makes the most out of an awkward space, and putting a raised shelf in the corner behind the sink means no space is wasted.

Unusual kitchen sink shapes with curves and swirls add interest – but keep them large enough to be practical! You could even make your sink into a talking point with some beautiful engraving on a copper design or turn your sink into a mosaic by tiling the inside. Contrast colours with your kitchen surroundings to really make it stand out! In the modern kitchen, the sink choices are surprisingly endless.
