Having A New Kitchen Installed? Take The Opportunity To Declutter

Getting A New Kitchen? Take The Opportunity To Declutter

If you’re getting a new kitchen, you will be taking out all of your dishes, cutlery, appliances and gadgets out of your old kitchen so that you can put them into your new one.

At My Beautiful Kitchen, we think this is the perfect opportunity to take a look at the objects you have gathered in your kitchen and ask yourself if you can get rid of any unnecessary clutter.

Clutter accumulates naturally over the years, we buy things or are given them and they are placed in a drawer or a cupboard. Many of these things are rarely and sometimes never used and begin to drift further back into the depths of the cupboards. It is only when you clear everything out years later that you find these forgotten objects and wonder “where did this come from?”

Before moving into your new kitchen you can make a goal of eliminating anything unnecessary from your kitchen items. You don’t want to place the useless junk from your old kitchen straight into your new one, do you? Not only is this clutter unsightly, it also takes up storage space and makes it more difficult to find the things that you need.

Make a goal that you will only put things into your new kitchen that you actually will need and use. This way your kitchen will look cleaner and more spacious and will be much easier to clean and organize. Here are some tips for de-cluttering your kitchen:

  • One of the first things to do is to get rid of anything which doesn’t work. It might seem obvious, but there are probably plenty of cheap knives which are worn out and don’t cut anymore or bent cookie sheets in your kitchen. If it is an essential item you can replace it, otherwise get rid of it.
  • Do you have one of those one-job kitchen gadgets such as a hot dog cooker or a set of jelly moulds in crazy shapes that you never use? Rather than letting them gather dust in your cupboards, you can donate them so that another family can enjoy them.
  • Seasonal cooking tools, such as your Santa-shaped cookie cutters and your festive wine glasses can be placed away in a storage area such as in the closet or the attic and brought out only during the Christmas season.
  • When you are setting up your new kitchen after it is installed, determine a rightful place for everything. With a logical storage system you can get in a good habit of putting everything back where it belongs so that the mess will not reappear.
  • Identify the essential kitchen items that you use in your daily meal preparation 90% of the time and make sure that they are kept in the most convenient and accessible places in your new kitchen.

If you can take time to de-clutter your old kitchen, eliminate all of your unnecessary stuff and think logically about putting what’s left in your new kitchen then you will be able to enjoy the benefits of a cleaner and more organised kitchen.
