Keep Your Family Well Fed During a Kitchen Installation
Keep Your Family Well Fed During a Kitchen Installation
A new kitchen installation is a very exciting time, but it can also mean an inconvenient disruption to your family’s routine as you wait for your new kitchen. Most of the time our installations don’t take very long, however while your kitchen is under construction you will be limited as to how much cooking you can do at home.
During this time, how can you provide healthy and affordable meals for your family? It can be tempting to simply order take away for every meal until your kitchen is complete, but not only is this expensive it is also high in calories. Luckily, it is not impossible to make healthy and delicious meals even if you don’t have a kitchen. Don’t tell us we never give you any ideas here at My Beautiful Kitchen!
Set up a mini kitchen somewhere else
While your new kitchen is being installed, you can set up a “mini kitchen” in another location in your house such as the dining room. You can plug in the toaster, kettle and microwave and even the fridge if you have room. Set up a few dishes and a chopping board and you will have a small space for preparing simple meals such as sandwiches and salads. Don’t forget the tin-opener, cutting board, knives and spices. If you have a small hot plate which you use for camping, you might want to bring it out and use it to boil water and cook pasta, vegetables or rice.
A really handy device to have for a temporary kitchen is a crock pot, as you can chop up the ingredients, plug it in and turn it on in the morning and by the time you come home from work you will have a delicious home-cooked meal waiting for you that will taste just like you made it in a working kitchen!
Plan Ahead
Right before your kitchen installation, make up some large batches of your family’s favourite healthy meals such as stews, soups and chilli. Divide them up into individual portion containers and freeze them, so that you can simply microwave them later when you don’t have access to the kitchen.
Use the barbecue instead
If you’re kitchen is just a pipe dream at the moment, it might be worth thinking about planning your kitchen installation in the summer months so that you can grill most of your meals. The barbecue doesn’t have to just be used for steaks and hamburgers; you can cook plenty of healthy meals on it including fish, chicken, vegetables and much more. Look up a few barbecue-friendly recipes to get started.
Eat more fresh food
There are plenty of dishes that you can prepare which don’t need to be cooked in any way. Sandwiches, vegetables, wholegrain crackers, fruits, cheese and other such foods can be great healthy lunches that take very little preparation. Try baby carrots with hummus for dip, or brie cheese on crackers with a slice of apple.
Although it can be somewhat difficult to prepare meals for your family during a kitchen installation, there are a few strategies that you can use to keep everyone well fed until your beautiful new kitchen is complete.
