You Won’t Get That Sinking Feeling With My Beautiful Kitchen
The area of the kitchen where we spend most time – apart from at the table – is the kitchen sink and it’s a major feature in any kitchen. So it’s important to get the right sink for you when it comes to designing a new kitchen.
There’s an enormous range of different types and brand names to choose from not just in terms of design but also materials and size. Remember you’ll be filling your sink with scalding hot water, dropping huge weights into it such as copper pots and casserole dishes and it’ll be the most scoured place in your home. So a sink doesn’t have to simply look good – it also has to be tough.
Another issue to think about is the depth of the sink. Sure, it’s good to have a deep sink as you’ll be able to get more in it and there’ll be fewer splashing. But if it’s very deep, how comfortable is it for you to reach the bottom? If you’re small, this could prove uncomfortable and leading to straining your back. Remember to calculate in the distance between your tap and sink (incidentally the more the distance, the greater the splashing).
We’ll give you a taster of some of the more popular ones which we regular fit here at My Beautiful Kitchen:
Stainless Steel Sinks
This is the most popular type of sink.
Enamel Sinks
These sinks can be based on cast iron or steel and come in different colours. The disadvantage of them is that heavy weights dropped on them can cause the enamel to chip or crack – and then rust sets in
Undermount Sinks
These look better than the traditional top mount alternative (see below) and make cleaning up a breeze as there’s no lip to catch dirt or crumbs. They’re fitted underneath the counter and are comparatively expensive though and usually require a waterproof countertop to sit alongside them (which rules out laminate or wood).
Double Bowl Sinks
These sinks are extremely handy if you’re regularly busy in the kitchen because it means you can both soak pots and rinse vegetables etc at the same time. They do take up quite a bit of space though so make sure your kitchen can accommodate it
Top Mount Sinks
A sink which is lowered into the counter with the lip sitting on the top. These are easy to install and relatively inexpensive but don’t really fit in with a designer kitchen.
Belfast (Butler) Sinks
The bowl with type of sink is lower than the actual counter. It’s often very deep and can look great in certain types of kitchens eg old-fashioned or farmhouse and shabby chic style rooms. They require a special cabinet underneath and can prove a bit too expensive for most budgets.
Bar Sink
Small and convenient in round and square shapes, these tend to look good in kitchen islands. These are great for small kitchens
