Making The Most Of An Open Plan Kitchen
Making The Most Of An Open Plan Kitchen
An open plan kitchen and dining area can be a fantastic use of space, whether you have a small kitchen and you want to open it out, or whether you have large rooms but you want to create an even larger and airier space to socialise and entertain in.
No matter what your reasons for settling on an open plan design, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you make the most of the space you’ve got.
Let there be light
The best part about open plan living is the light and air it adds to your space.
Make the most of it with large sliding doors facing out onto a patio or balcony, and consider adding a skylight for even more natural light in the room.
If you don’t already have an open plan kitchen but you’d love one, here at My Beautiful Kitchen the experts can make it happen – a simple task of knocking the dividing walls and opening up your home to a whole lot more light and space!
Try to place the dining table by the glass doors to add to the illusion of al fresco dining, and opt for lighter woods and white shades to allow the light to reflect easily around the room.
The central island
An open plan kitchen doesn’t mean that there can’t be any divisions. Consider placing an island in the middle of the room, separating the kitchen and dining areas.
However, if you make sure that the sink and hob are on the island then you can still be sociable as you prepare food.
Add some table space and some chairs to your island and you now have an extra entertaining area too!
Consider what you want
You may have specific reasons for wanting to go for an open plan kitchen, or perhaps you are quite vague on the details but you just know you would like more space.
It’s important to think about your wants and needs in the kitchen before you commit to anything.
Have a chat with the My Beautiful Kitchen team before you attempt any re-designing, as this will help you to get the most out of your new kitchen space.
Talking things through with a designer will help highlight the best place to extend your kitchen and help you consider which angles allow you the best views of the outdoors or allow in the most light.
Think carefully about where you would like to sit, eat and cook, as all of this will also determine the positioning of your units and appliances.
It can be disastrous and extremely costly not to plan out your kitchen design before those dividing walls come down, so think carefully before you begin so you won’t need to compromise later on when it’s too late to change anything.
