The Retro Kitchen

Every so often, we love a walk down memory lane here at My Beautiful Kitchen. Sometimes it’s nice to reminisce about the kitchen designs we’ve seen come and go down the many years we’ve been in the business.

But it’s good news for those who like to go back in time…because retro fashions are great to use in your kitchen and can provide your home with a truly striking room.

So, to turn your kitchen into a real conversation piece, you can get ahead in the style stakes by injecting your kitchen with retro goodies.

Remember, if you’re looking to take your old kitchen out and replace with a retro style, we’re bound to have something you will like.

In fact, if you give us a call, we can always help you while you’re in front of your laptop to suggest styles which may suit.

But there are plenty of other ways in which you can turn your room into a retro haven. To give you a start, here are some helpful hints from us:

Seating – If you have a spare piece of wall you may wish to create a small seating area. Or, you might have an island or breakfast bar in your kitchen. Why not look at some retro seating to use there? We like the Avanti bar stool from www.very.co.uk – curved and comfortable it will sit perfectly in any kitchen. At just £35 each this is a designer buy at a budget price.

Other retro seating ideas include a using a bench instead of separate chairs at your table. Simple wooden ones or red leather padded seats will give you almost a 1960s American fast food theme to work with.

Appliances – When it comes to your white goods, you can go all out. There is currently so much choice and no appliance needs to be stark white and plastic looking. Smeg are famous for their retro appliances. OK, so they might not be cheap, but if you’re looking for that something extra special to complete your look, then these pieces are a real investment. Their fridge freezers, with large chrome effect handles, come in at around £1,150. They have a huge amount of colours to choose from and they manufacture left-handed ones, too!

If you have a big budget, then The Vintage Fridge Company sell unique items, as well. Big Chill make a superb looking retro styled dishwasher with that familiar American style logo font which just compliments your vintage kitchen beautifully.

Colour – Buttery creams, duck egg blues, sage greens or peaches; all of these colours not only support your retro theme but this year they are very much ‘in’ within the fashion world.

Retailers everywhere are displaying these beautiful hues, and you could think about painting feature walls or wooden furniture. Painting all your dining chairs in different colours really give the shabby chic feel but if you’re not that brave, simply adding bright or pastel cushions or striking decorations to your furniture will work just as wonderfully.

Art – Artwork will also really add zing to your space. Whatever your preference and depending on the look and colours you wish to bring out, there is something for every kitchen online or in your high street retailer.

We like www.zazzle.co.uk for retro posters and in particular the Andy Warhol prints widely available from £22 to £200 featuring Campbell’s soups, Marilyn Monroe and many other icons of British and Hollywood background.
