Size Matters…With Washing Machines

Size Matters With Washing Machines

It’s a phrase most men dread, but when it comes to washing machines size really is important but is bigger always better? Well, not always it seems. Choosing the wrong drum-size washing machine can result in something of a headache, particularly if you choose one that’s too small to satisfy.

When it comes to washing machines, drum sizes range from 5kg to a mammoth 12kg. As a good guide, 1kg is equivalent to 5 T-shirts, so a 5kg drum size will fit in 25 T-shirts, while a 12kg will power through 60.

In smaller households, or flats, a smaller drum-size machine would be perfectly suitable, but not so for large families, or those with plenty of washing to do.

So, here’s a couple of things to think about before choosing your washing machine:

1. How many people do you wash for?

This is the first thing you need to consider. If you live alone, or are part of a couple, you won’t need a drum-size anywhere near as big as one that a large family (complete with young children who seem to get most of their food on their clothes, rather than in their mouths) will require.

2. What do you need to wash?

Consider whether you like to take your duvets to the launderette, or like to wash them at home. What about school uniforms, or curtains, walking jackets, shoes, and so on? The more items you wash, the bigger your drum size will need to be. As a guide, a single duvet will fit into a 6kg washing machine, double in a 7kg, queen-size in an 8kg, and king-size in a 9kg.

For most households, a 7-8kg drum size should cope perfectly well, but even bigger size drums can be very energy efficient nowadays.
